WHY DO COMPANIES PAY SHIFT ALLOWANCE?
Shift allowance is meant to compensate an employee for the inconvenience of working non-regular hours. This principle was explained in the case of Industrial Court Award No: 11/74
"... the argument for the shift allowance is that by working irregular hours ... the homelife of the worker is disrupted, he is denied the normal hours of leisure, his daily routine is out of gear with that of his other members of his family and he is deprived of the opportunity of partaking in the ordinary social and recreational pursuits at the timed usually devoted for them."
