On 22 Mar 2010, the Human Rights Committee (HRC) organised a presentation by the President of the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute (CJEI), Sir Dennis Byron, on “Domestic Application of International Human Rights Law”. Sir Dennis was in Kuala Lumpur to attend the Biennial Meeting of Commonwealth Judicial Educators. The presentation took place at the Bar Council Auditorium and was attended by Members of the Bar, pupils in chambers, representatives from the diplomatic community and non-governmental organisations, and university students.
Malaysia has a pretty bad record in this area.Apparently some PO's and Prison wardens just don't know what human rights means. The Human Rights Act was only enacted after more than 2,000 people died while in police custody or awaiting trial in prison. Many prisoners have mysteriously given up the ghost too.The latest casualty was Mr. Teoh Beng Hock. It is really a national disgrace.
